Mid garnet with a pinkish rim. Ginger spice and some reduction on the nose: smoky, well balanced and structured. The wine is both jammy and a teeny bit reduced on the palate, but it’s sustained by fresh acidity and medium weight tannins. It should age, but the alcohol may start to dominate in bottle.
Score Range: 91-95
2009 Gros Frère et Soeur, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Slightly cloudy mid-garnet hued. Leafy, truffley, red fruits nose. The wine is oaky and dense on the palate with fresh acidity. It’s pretty closed at the moment, but this is serious stuff: concentrated, smoky and naunced. Give it at least five years.
2009 Hubert Chauvenet-Chopin, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Mid ruby/garnet. Smoky, oak-dominated nose that is still closed at present. There’s a hint of volatility here, but it adds a lift to the sweet, concentrated fruit. The wine is a little over-ripe and jammy, but it has hidden depths.
2009 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Very pale garnet/pink, verging on a rosé in hue. The alcohol is a little prominent on the nose, but there’s good acidity and some texture too. The fruit is a tad over-ripe and confected, but the tannins are gentle, the flavours palate-caressingly sweet.
2009 Anne Gros, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Mid-garnet with a ruby/pink rim. Aromatic, oak-infused nose, made in a modern style. Juicy with a hint of stemminess. Structured with an appealing interplay between fruit, acid and oak. Good length, punchy, made to age.
2009 Domaine d'Ardhuy, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Mid ruby/pink. Smoky, incense-like nose. A wine that needs time to express itself. At the moment, the tannins seem a little dry and extracted, possibly a result of the hot vintage. But there’s good underlying structure here and sweet, concentrated fruit.
2009 Armelle et Bernard Rion, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )If you like your red Burgundies pale (and I’ve seen deeper coloured rosés than this), purchase a case of this wine. Very delicate on the nose with wild strawberry and a hint of spice. Sweet cherry fruit on the palate, with a touch of meaty reduction. Light and ethereal, this is a very drinkable Pinot, although arguably closer to Premier than Grand Cru quality.
2009 Château de Santenay, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Pale garnet/ruby with a splash of pink. Youthful, elegant and complex perfume: savoury, some oak and supple red fruits. The acidity is very crisp, lending the wine balance and harmony and freshness. There’s quite a bit of stuffing on the palate, suggesting that the wine will develop in bottle. Good and likley to get better.
2009 Dufouleur Frères, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )A pale, almost translucent Pinot. Scented, leafy and complex with gentle understatement and a touch of smoky oak. The palate is very sweet, but the oak is a little intrusive here. A shae because the fruit is of high quality and the acidity gives the wine a refreshing lift. Maybe the oak will integrate with time.
2009 Domaine du Clos Frantin, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Youthful, pale ruby-garnet colour, scented red fruits, elegant with a touch oak. Still very young, with marked tannins (for Pinot and this vintage) on the palate and succulent, sweet fruit. Good acidity, very fine, good ageing potential.
2009 Faiveley, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )Mid garnet, pale rim. Still quite closed. Red cherry and some Asian spices on the nose. Quite a powerrfu, dense wines with plenty of tannin and oak. Ripe and silky, very well rounded with good ageing potential. Textured and plush, this underlines recent improvements at this Nuits St Georges-based négociant house.
2009 Domaine Denis Mortet, Clos de Vougeot, Burgundy
( ££££, 13.5%, Fine + Rare )There’s no denying the quaility or ambition of the wines from this revitalised domaine. This is a very powerful Pinot, closer to a top Gevrey than a Clos de Vougeot. There’s a lot of oak on the wine at the moment, but this is a wine that is built for bottle age. The underlying fruit is excellent, just waiting to strut its stuff in five years or more.
