This metropolis loves great wine lists. And, we want to enjoy them with excellent food and good service. So, this year’s “Best List” takes into account more than ever the overall experience.
Your wine director parades around a snazzy bottle throughout service instead of repouring your glasses or offering help with the list? New Yorkers notice. We also wonder if that bottle being shown off repeatedly while being walked like a dog through your dining room actually has the same wine in the bottle. We’re jaded ike that.
New Yorkers also tire of wine lists that look the same everywhere. Oh, you got an allocation of one bottle of Ganevat, too? With the absolute world of wine at their disposals, New York city sommeliers should not be crafting look-alike wine lists. The best NYC wine lists offer a diversity of styles and prices as well as wines that diners actually want to drink. Just as I don’t want to drink from a list of nothing but big brands, I also want more than the obvious cult and kool kid wines.
Concise lists can be fascinating to explore as their tome-like brethren, but a wine list has to be distintive to make this list. I’ve scrubbed off a lot of restaurants this year, even some that I frequent. New York is too dialed in to offer slack.
