This is a first-ever Rueda Top 100, written by me and my friend and colleague Beth Willard. It is part of our extensive coverage of what we think is the most exciting wine-producing country in Europe right now.

Beth and I spent six days in the region in January this year, tasting 332 wines from 62 producers. These varied massively in terms of style, vintage and ageing potential.

Indeed, it would be no exaggeration to say that the trip changed our understanding of the region in a profound way. Our conclusion is that Verdejo, Rueda’s signature grape, belongs among Spain’s and indeed the world’s best white grapes.

From the 332 wines we tasted, we have selected a Top 100, all of which scored 92 points or more. They are a wonderfully diverse set of wines. And while a handful are expensive, the majority are appealingly affordable, especially if you are used to paying white Burgundy prices.
