Description
Peru and Bolivia are two of the minnows of the South American wine scene, although both have been making wine since the 16th century.
I’d been to Peru once before, in late 2022, but in January this year, I got the chance to return to Lima and add a visit to Bolivia. Both are fascinating countries with real potential. There are similarities between them, not least the presence of so-called heritage varieties that were brought to Latin America by the Spaniards, but also significant differences.
The result of my research is this report, based on conversations with winemakers in Peru and a more extensive set of visits on the ground in Bolivia.
All in all, I tasted 231 wines from the two countries. Of those, 51 in Peru and 80 in Bolivia scored over 90 points and 12 received 95 points or more.
