What a wonderful week! In January, I visited Rueda where I tasted 347 wines from 62 producers. The result is this report, our second Top 100 for the region.
2024 was a fantastic year for young wines, offering great varietal and regional typicity. Many of these wines feature in the Top 100, but in the introduction, I have also included a list of wines with good scores that offer quality at a more-than-affordable price point.
The report also highlights the aging potential of Rueda. Like other important white wine varieties in Spain – think Albariño, Godello, Viura – Verdejo from Rueda benefits from time in bottle, gaining weight and complexity. And those wines fermented or aged in amphora, concrete or barrel, offer wonderful structure.
Producers continue to experiment in the region, whether exploring traditional Dorado styles of wines, or single vineyard wines from recuperated vineyards. Sauvignon Blanc is also getting more interesting every year and the relatively new category of Gran Vino is producing some of the best wines in the region, with 30 of the Top 100 classified as such.
Rueda is full of innovative winemakers, propelling the region forward while respecting its past. I hope you enjoy the selection of wines in this report, the result of their hard work and passion. Cheers!
