2020 Argentina Special Report

Description

This is the eighth edition of my Argentina report, the product of three weeks of travelling, tasting, vineyard visits and conversations with winemakers. And it’s my most in-depth overview yet.

Argentina finds itself in a difficult place right now. Like everyone who loves the country, I hope it can get out of its current economic malaise. Its wine industry has continued to grow, harvest and vinify grapes during this uncertain period. That it has done so while also producing the greatest wines in its history deserves enormous credit.

I first went to Argentina in 1992 and the transformation since then has been remarkable. I can’t think of another country, even South Africa, which has changed so much in my wine writing lifetime. Again and again this year, I tasted with a smile on my face as wine after great wine expressed its terroir with precision, grace and beauty. Plushness, exuberance and fruit weight come easily in Argentina; poise, elegance and balance are harder won.

In all, I tasted 1,736 wines from 331 wineries. Of those, I wrote detailed tasting notes for the 1,128 reds, whites, rosés and fizzes that scored 90 points or more.

Within the report you’ll also find:

  • The ten things you need to know about Argentina – the country at a glance
  • Maps and guides to the key wine regions
  • My winemakers of the year and the top wines of 2020
  • A classification of Argentina’s top 250 producers
  • My photographic portraits of the winemakers of Argentina
  • Recommended restaurants

All for £20!
