For a long time, I have wanted to explore in depth the three wine regions on Madrid’s doorstep that all enjoy the influence of the Sierra de Gredos. The impressive mountain range that forms part of the Sistema Central to Madrid’s west is home to some of the most interesting wines in Spain. Madrid is surrounded by diverse wine styles, and we can track their characteristics as we sweep around its border from the mountains of Ávila to the plains that stretch to La Mancha.
There are three Denominación de Origen (none of which bear the name “Gredos”!) whose producing areas extend into the mountain range. This report is a review of the wines of these three DOs, from the vineyards of the Gredos mountains to those in the other sub-zones of these regions.
In total, I tasted 288 wines from 50 bodegas, the majority of which I visited during two weeks in October 2024.
