Galicia is one of Spain’s great wine regions with winemaking traditions that stretch to Roman times. It is a varied terroir covering a myriad of local varieties.
This report deals with the four inland DOs of Galicia, all of which are within (or partially in) the province of Ourense: Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras and Monterrei. I tasted just under 500 wines for the report, all classified within the DOs and currently in the market (or about to be released).
This is green Spain with compelling, racy whites and elegant Atlantic reds. It is deep Spain, deep Galicia… Galicia profunda!
