2022 Ribera del Duero Special Report

Description

Ribera del Duero is currently celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the creation of its Denominación de Origen, so now is a good time to look back to that date (and beyond to Roman times) as well as to the future. How will Ribera del Duero develop now?
As ever, my report provides comprehensive coverage of what’s happening on the ground right now, based on two weeks’ research in the region earlier this year. All in all, I tasted 578 wines from 160 producers, around half of whom I visited in person. A total of 376 of the wines I sampled received 90 points or more and three were awarded 98 points.
My report includes tasting notes for all these wines, as well as my second ranking of the region’s best bodegas (loosely based on the 1855 Classification in Bordeaux), my ten things you need to know about Ribera del Duero, my photos and recommendations for local restaurants as well as further reading.
I have also named my wines, winemakers and viticulturist of the year, and compiled a list of the best-value Ribera del Dueros under €12 retail in Spain. In short, this is everything you need to know to buy wines from this exciting, still-evolving wine region with confidence.
